summer camp nurse 2021

Position Summary:
Spend the summer in the lush, green Catskill Mountains of New York as our camp nurse and become a part of the historic Camp Shomria family; we’ve been camping together since 1928. This position is available for an RN or LPN and for an EMT or Paramedic. The position also welcomes your camp – age kids for free.

About our Camp:
Camp Shomria is a unique, small, non-religious progressive-Jewish camp of about 120 campers, ages 7 – 17, who share responsibility for chores and day-to-day camp functions. Most of our staff have grown up coming to camp and participating in year-round youth group activities. We are a tight-knit community of friends that is welcoming and encouraging to new-comers from every background and of every identity. Fun at camp includes learning about current events and social issues, Israeli and American-style dance and music, evening camp-fires and cook-outs, arts and crafts, creating plays, skits, and games, and relaxed, not-too-competitive sports. Everyone loves our Friday night non-traditional shabbat celebration.

Duration: June 27-August 1
The full camp session is Sunday, July 4th through Sunday, August 1st. The Camp Nurse is expected to arrive one week prior, for staff training week. It is a live-in position with free meals, starting at $900 per week. If you have children, they will be able to register for camp with a work exchange agreement.

Facilities:
Camp Shomria is rustic, rugged, and committed to a screen-free, out-door experience for campers. The nurse will have free wi-fi, a mini-fridge, and personal quarters inside the infirmary cabin, and is warmly encouraged to take all meals with campers and staff in the dining hall, and to participate in evening activities. Days off will be planned in advance.

Responsibilities:
The role of camp nurse is standard, with special responsibilities this year due to Covid 19. As always, the camp nurse will
  • Distribute daily medications to those who need -
  • Administer pre-approved medications such as Tylenol or Benadryl as warranted
  • Provide support especially to new campers
  • Perform cleaning and bandaging to cuts and abrasions
  • Assess campers and staff who may require the next level of care such as a visit to Urgent Care or the Catskill Regional Medical Center
  • Educate campers and staff about staying hydrated and maintaining personal hygiene

**This year, the nurse will work closely with the Board of Directors and the Camp Director to adhere to NYS Dept. of Health guidelines regarding prevention of Covid 19. The nurse will assist with maintaining health forms and records, especially documentation of testing, and with protecting our campers and staff from any unplanned interactions that could infiltrate or disturb Covid 19 safety protocols.
