educational philosophy

Picture
At its core, Hashomer Hatzair is a community of empowered youth ranging from age 8 to 23. We promote the values embedded in humanistic Judaism through democratic and experiential educational methods. We strive to enable our youth to become critical thinkers and well-rounded people who are passionate about taking ownership over their lives and communities, and inspired to change the world for the betterment of all people.
The games that we play, the way we take care of our camp, and the interaction we have with nature all contribute to the holistic nature of our education.  And though we have many camp-wide activities, the kvutzah (age-group) enhances personal learning and growth by allowing the campers to build trust and intimacy with a small group of people who all take part in shaping the group's identity and learning process until they become Madrichim (counselors) themselves.  We strive to create the most democratic learning experience out of an understanding that every person has something valuable to contribute and that meaningful learning comes from within.

“ School prepares you for college, Hashomer Hatzair prepares you for the world.”
                                                                                           -  Idan Sasson (Rosh Mosh, 2013)
