ken neveh midbar blog

October 10 - First ken of the year
On October 9th, Ken Neveh Midbar held out kickoff event of the year, and what an amazing start with 42 excited chanichim!
We began the day with a “Who is your REAL rosh ken?” investigation at mifkad in which we learned that Roni and Yonatan were actually phonies!
Afterwards, we all got to know each other a little bit better with some name games and an interactive scavenger hunt. Upon being treated to some spastic sugar crystals (lollipops), the kids were split up into chalutzim (2nd-6th grade), tzofim (7th-9th grade), and kibbutzi (10th grade).
Chalutzim danced their way into their new friend’s hearts with a dancing version of the name game. They then played catch with a beach ball and completed tasks such as showing their “stupid shomer trick”, a funny spin-off of a talent show that we play where chanichim get to show off weird and random tricks to their fellow shomrim.
Tzofim continued their introductions with a speed dating game, in addition to discussing the new theme for the ken year, “walking the walk”. As a movement, our aim this year is to work as a community to act on our values of Socialism, Judaism, and Zionism. We hope to use the ken year as a space to not only learn and talk about these issues as a group, but also to engage with our greater community as Hashomer Hatzair in order to make positive change.

Kibbutzi, our oldest chanichim, met with their new year-long madrich, Natan, who also introduced them to our theme. They then discussed how they wanted to contribute to this theme as the new role models on our moshava.

We are so glad that everyone was able to make it this week. We had a lot of fun with everyone and hope to see you again in two weeks at the next ken!
