Hashomer Hatzair USA/Camp Shomria News

our Summer 2021 decision

Dear Camp Shomria Community,

First, we’d like to thank you for your patience as we work to figure out Summer 2021. Earlier this month, Governor Cuomo announced that New York summer camps will open, and we are so excited to welcome you all back to Shomria. In the meantime our staff and Board of Directors, in consultation with several Medical Professionals, have been working diligently to ensure that this summer opens safely and successfully.

After deep consideration, we have reached the conclusion that this summer can only have one arrival day (July 4), and we will extend First Session by one week (until August 1). Anyone registered for Second Session will have the opportunity to switch to First Session (now Full Summer), and anyone already registered for a Full Summer will receive a refund on weeks 5+6.

This means no campers will be arriving on or after July 25.

For those already registered for this summer, please expect a phone call over the next few days to discuss further and answer any questions you may have. For those who have not yet registered, you can find updated rates+dates on our website.

We would like to take this opportunity to explain some of our considerations:
  • For safety reasons, we want to minimize the number of transition days. This means we will have only one arrival day, and not add new campers after that.
  • We want to make sure that our campers and staff both have an amazing experience throughout the summer.

Please keep an eye out for more updates and detailed explanations as we send them out. We have a Medical Advisory Committee, and plan to release our full summer guidelines in the next month (subject to future changes in CDC guidelines).

We understand that for many, this may come as a surprise or a disappointment. This decision is solely due to Covid reasons, and we hope to return to 6 weeks next summer. In the meantime, we highly encourage you to sign up for 4 weeks of jam-packed fun!

Thank you for trusting us to make a decision that ensures the physical and emotional safety of your children. We look forward to welcoming you back to Shomria come July.

Dear Camp Shomria community,

Many of you know me as a friend, Madricha, Mazkira, or Rosh Chinuch. I have grown up in this movement, and am excited to now take on the position of Camp Director. Alex has done a fantastic job in a challenging year. I feel lucky to be able to build upon her and Adi's work, which includes new traditions such as Family Camp, and a community held closely together despite the distance.

Thankfully, there is no doubt that this summer camp WILL happen. That being said, there will certainly still be challenges leading into the summer, but I am confident that our team and hadracha will find creative solutions to make it the best summer ever! I intend to maintain the spirit of the youth movement, and make sure we come out of this pandemic stronger than ever. We have an amazing Shlicha and Hadracha, and we will work together to ensure the best experience for all of our campers. After this hectic year, I myself am excited to 'return home' to Mosh, and even more so to welcome you home too.

For those who have not yet met me, I look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts on camp. For those who I know, I look forward to meeting you in this new capacity. Thank you to the Hashomer Hatzair Board, and to Adi, for this opportunity. Please do not hesitate to reach out and connect!

Today we are announcing a staff transition, saying goodbye to our Camp Director Alex. She wrote her own letter explaining her decision to part ways with this position. Luckily, she will stay as a valued member of our community! Thank you for all of your work in these unprecedented times, Chazak ve Ematz!

Dear Hashomer Hatzair Camp Shomria Community,

As a 3rd generation to Hashomer Hatzair and an education professional, I was honored to take on the position of Camp Director at Shomria a year ago. Just as I began learning the organization and working at Shomria, the COVID pandemic started. The work I was hoping to do shifted and changed, as did so many things in our everyday life.

Once Summer Camp 2020 (Mosh Kayitz) was canceled, my family and I decided to travel to Israel where we were hoping to have in person education for our two daughters. We are now in Jerusalem, working remotely and missing our US and Brooklyn community everyday. Our daughters were not only lucky to have school in person most of this year, they are also thankful for the opportunity to spend time and build relationships with family on a weekly basis. Following hours and days of contemplation we have decided that at this point it is best for us to stay here and continue to build our life here in Israel.

Thank you to Adi, Odelia, Tal, and Minna as well as the whole Hashomer Hatzair board and Hadracha for welcoming me into the organization and the position. I have learned and grown tremendously in such a short year. I welcome Lior Ben Zvi, a camp alumni and a movement Bogeret, into our staff. With her understanding of the combination of both a camp and a youth movement, I am confident that she will do an amazing job working with Adi and Yoni, preparing and leading during the coming summer camp season and beyond.

It is my hope to continue and work with Shomria on a smaller capacity and see many of you in person this coming summer.

Sincerely,

Alex Ben-Abba

For the rest of the month, you can continue to reach Alex at alex@campshomria.org
